ASIAN ELEPHANT IN A SALT LICK

Asian elephants, like  some other mammals, need some essential mineral nutrients that cannot be obtained by their usual diet, specially in nutrient poor ecosystems. These essential nutrients are vital for the development of bones and muscles and to detoxify their bodies.

Elephants can find these minerals in salt licks and they can be frequently seen on them digging and eating dirt.

I took these nice pictures in Khao Yai National Park , where there are many salt licks along the main road.
